- FileX encrypts it in your browser, uploads only the encrypted bytes, and gives you a link.
- Share the link (copy it, or use the built-in "Email this link" button, which opens your own email app). The recipient opens it, and FileX decrypts the file entirely in their browser.
The one tool here that is honest about being different
Every other tool on FileX runs 100% locally — nothing is ever uploaded. Send cannot make that claim, because sharing a link that works later, possibly on a different device, requires holding the file somewhere in between. We built it to give up as little as possible: the file is encrypted with a key generated in your browser before any upload begins, and that key lives only in the link itself — in the part after #, which browsers never transmit to any server. We store and serve ciphertext we cannot read, and delete it once it is downloaded (Free: after the first download) or once the link expires.
Team links add a password FileX never sees either
On a Team-tier link, the actual decryption key is derived from both the link and a password — so a leaked or forwarded link alone cannot open the file. The password should be shared with the recipient through a different channel than the link (a call, a chat message, in person) — never appended to the link itself.
Frequently asked questions
Does FileX see my file?
No. The file is encrypted in your browser before upload, and FileX never receives the decryption key — it exists only in the link's URL fragment, which is never sent to any server. We store and serve encrypted bytes we cannot read.
What happens after the link expires or is downloaded?
The encrypted file and its metadata are deleted from our server. Free-tier links self-destruct after exactly one download; Pro, Lifetime, and Team links can be downloaded multiple times until they expire (24 hours on Free, 7 days on Pro/Lifetime, 30 days on Team).
Can I password-protect a link?
Yes, on Team. The password is mixed into the encryption key itself (not just an access check), and FileX never receives or stores it — share it with your recipient separately from the link.
